Reflexology for Gait Correction: A Simple Technique for Better Walking
Do you ever feel like something’s just a little “off” in the way you walk? You’re not alone. Our gait (the way we move when walking) is an essential part of how we interact with the world. When it’s out of balance, it can show up in unexpected ways: discomfort, stiffness, misalignment, or even fatigue.
The good news? Reflexology has some powerful tools to help.
In this post, I’m sharing a simple yet effective technique I was taught called Balancing the Gaits. It focuses on gait reflex points found on the top of the foot, just above where the toes meet the rest of the foot, in the spaces between the tendons. These points can be very tender but working with them gently can bring noticeable improvements to how you move.
What Is Gait?
Gait refers to the way we walk—our posture, rhythm, and the pattern of movement in each step. It’s controlled by a combination of muscles, nerves, reflexes, and body awareness. A healthy gait supports balance, alignment, and ease of movement.
What Happens When Gait Is Off?
When your gait is off, even slightly, your whole body can feel the effects. You might notice:
- Uneven weight distribution
- Muscle strain or stiffness
- Lower back or hip discomfort
- Poor posture or balance
- A general feeling of “walking funny”
Sometimes, this shows up before you even feel pain—just a sense that your walk doesn’t feel natural.
How Reflexology Supports Gait Correction
Reflexology offers an amazing way to support and reset your natural gait pattern. By working on gait reflex points, you’re not only stimulating local tissue and circulation, but also helping the body communicate better across movement pathways.
These points are found in the spaces between the tendons on the top of the feet, just above where the toes meet the foot. They can be quite tender, so always let the person know in advance and check in as you work.

An Alternative for Sensitive Feet: The Gait Reflex Holding Release
Not everyone likes strong pressure, especially in sensitive or ticklish areas. That’s where the Gait Reflex Holding Release Technique comes in.
Gently hold all of the points with one hand by placing your thumb at the ball of the foot and your four fingers across the spaces between the tendons. At the same time, place your opposite hand on the corresponding reflex points on the hand. Hold both the hand and foot together to stimulate the reflex pathway without causing discomfort.

These tender reflex points, located between the tendons just above the toes, are used to help rebalance walking patterns.

Try It Yourself
This technique is great for reflexologists, bodyworkers, or anyone who wants to improve how they move through life. Here’s how to begin:
- Communicate clearly with the person receiving the work
- Start with light pressure and increase gradually only if comfortable
- Try a short walk before and after to see if you notice a difference
- Practice the Holding Release for a gentler option
